This swine named Marmurstein took over Gray Line, rigged a union election in November 2016 (one of two election catastrophes that month, the other being a national election held Nov. 8), and summarily fired about 65 of us veteran tour guides in December, not long before Xmas (nice!) So I lost the best job I've had in this millennium after 10 1/2 years. For that time, I was atop the red double-decker buses run by Gray Line/NY Sightseeing. After a short stint with Gray Line rival Big Bus that lasted from Feb. to Apr. 2017 (don't ask), I did walking tours, for a while, which is in theory healthier for a Type 2 diabetic weighing in excess of 300 lbs. Twice a year, on primary day and the general election in November, t I work the polls for Monmouth County elections, and on Nov. 6, I'll be doing it for the third time. It's an easy, fun gig if you can stay awake for 14 hours the polls are open in NJ, and a decent check ($300!) In Dec. 2021, I moved from Highlands to Middletown, though the post office has me in Red Bank. In 2019 and 2020, I worked on enumerating county residents for the US Census Bureau, good pay, good fun, and important work) For the last three years I've been working for my elder brother Hayes's law firm, though I hope to have moved on to another position by the time we reune.

School Story

On the senior trip to Orlando, my first time in the Sunshine State and I imagine for many of my classmates, too, there were a lot of, shall we say, high jinks? I love that it was the '70s and that we could get away with so much more stuff than kids generally can today. So of course, the C2H5OH was flowing freely, in various forms, beer, wine, spirits, and there was a lot of activity in the rooms! So though supervision was fairly light, I guess at some point the chaperones wanted to earn their trip/combat pay/whatever, rooms would be raided! So I can't recall whose suite we were in when Churchill Clark came storming in (does it matter?) when the boisterousness became too much to ignore, I suppose. So he literally kicked me in the butt as he broke the party up and evicted all but the rightful residents of said hotel suite!! I wasn't even angry -- it didn't hurt, and I was too smashed, and I quickly realized what a good story it made for! We kind of deserved it. But I wonder in the day and age we are in now, if he'd have dared do such a thing, and what kind of hot water it would make for if I were to have made an issue of it. I'd have to be pretty egregiously affected, though, to jeopardize anyone's job, especially a teacher's, given that they are so important in our society but not always compensated in a manner to reflect that. I also fondly recollect quality time with beautiful brunettes, with initials MN and MJH! You can edit that out if you like.

Remember when we ran into each other at some little inn in Brussels, June 1983?! It was my first backpacking trip of Europe, from June 3 to I think Sept. 2, and I flew back from London on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, just in time to attend our first reunion (five years, obviously) at I think a VFW post on New Road in Monmouth Junction. We were both checking in to the little place, I having just arrived on train from Antwerp. Another of the myriad examples I suppose all of us have experienced of small world!
